Genuine Slate Roofs using SlateTec

Lighter weight genuine slate roofs

Each slate roof is as unique as the home it protects. In addition to Fontaine Roofing & Siding’s extensive experience in traditional slate roof installations, we have done many installations using the more recent lightweight slate roof installation technologies including the SlateTec™ installation system.

A Fontaine-installed lightweight slate roof still features genuine Vermont S1-rated roofing slate — the highest quality roofing slate available — yet the roof will weigh about 40% less than if the slate were installed traditionally. That can bring the weight of a slate roof down to under 6 lbs per sq ft— a slate roof installation weight that does not require the additional structural support traditional installations require.*

With SlateTec, the key to lower roof weight is the patented, rugged interlayment which not only protects the roof deck — even if a slate is damaged or missing — it allows for less slate overlap during installation. The result is a reduction in the number of slates needed to complete the roof.

A SlateTec slate roof looks the same as a traditionally-installed slate roof. In fact, all the traditional slate roof design options are available including random widths, color blends, drop downs, and staggers.

And SlateTec installation techniques can be used for slate cladding.

SlateTec natural slate installation method is the right choice for:

  • New roofs: Lower engineering and structural costs for homes, businesses, and even public institutions.
  • Cedar shake or synthetic slate replacements: Upgrade to genuine slate without the concerns normally associated with a slate roof’s structural support requirements.*
  • Historic restorations: Where a traditional installation of slate is preferred but there are concerns about an aging building’s structural integrity.
  • Slate Cladding: The SlateTec installation method can be used to install genuine slate as exterior siding and on dormers.

*The structure of any building should be professionally evaluated before installing slate.

Is it time to replace a cedar shake roof that has aged and is falling apart?

Cedar shakes have been a desirable and natural roofing material for years, that have a natural aesthetic appeal without needing extra structural support.

Today, with the SlateTec installation system, slate is a competitive solution with added benefits! A slate roof has more than three times the longevity, a natural look that does not age (except for some potential natural color change enhancements), is impervious to infestation, has arguably a more distinctive natural aesthetic, and needs no additional structural support. Factor in the recognized increase in property value and you may find that an upgrade to slate is the right solution for your home.

Cedar shakes discolor and deteriorate with age

S-1 slate roofs may exhibit different hues as they age, but never warp and are impervious to bio-growth and insect infestation. Contact Fontaine Roofing to learn the benefits and drawbacks of any roofing material.

It is interesting to note that the copper valleys and other accessories are stillin good shape. See our page on the benefits of copper accessories.
